Condition Overview

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common and misunderstood causes of wrist pain, hand numbness, and finger tingling, representing nearly 90% of all peripheral nerve compression cases. It develops when the median nerve becomes compressed under the flexor retinaculum, a strong ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel.

This compression can occur due to repetitive wrist motion, tendon inflammation, or fluid retention, resulting in wrist pain, tingling, and hand weakness. Studies show wrist flexion or extension can raise tunnel pressure up to tenfold, restricting nerve blood flow and oxygen supply, leading to characteristic carpal tunnel symptoms.

Typical symptoms include tingling, numbness, or weakness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Over time, grip strength may diminish, and everyday tasks, such as typing, buttoning clothing, or holding objects, can become more challenging. In severe or prolonged cases, the thenar muscles at the base of the thumb may begin to atrophy, affecting grip and fine motor control.

However, not all CTS symptoms originate at the wrist. Tension, postural imbalance, or nerve irritation in the neck, shoulder, or forearm can mimic or exacerbate CTS, a phenomenon known as double crush syndrome.

Traditional treatments such as bracing, stretching, ergonomic adjustments, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, or surgical release of the flexor retinaculum may offer temporary relief. Yet many patients experience persistent or recurring symptoms when the underlying dysfunction isn’t fully addressed.

Left untreated, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can progress from intermittent numbness to chronic hand weakness and functional impairment, making early, regenerative intervention essential.

Ask Yourself

Before considering surgery or another round of injections, ask yourself

Why do so many people still suffer for months or years and eventually undergo surgery?
Why do symptoms often return even after surgical release?
And why do two people with the same diagnosis respond so differently to identical treatments?

These questions reveal why traditional treatments often fall short. At Shiva Physical Therapy, we address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Think Differently About Healing

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome isn’t just a wrist problem; it’s a system-wide nerve and fascia imbalance that affects how your body communicates and heals. When any part of that chain becomes restricted and inflamed through poor posture and repetitive strain, it can alter how nerves glide and how tissues communicate. Over time, this leads to increased tunnel pressure, decreased blood flow, and nerve irritation, which worsens median nerve entrapment.

Traditional care often targets the symptoms around the issue rather than the dysfunction within it. While strengthening and stretching can improve mobility, they rarely address the true source of nerve compression or restore harmony between the neuromuscular and fascial systems, and they do little to regenerate injured tissues. Surgery, typically involving release of the flexor retinaculum, may relieve localized pressure but often fails to correct upstream dysfunctions in the neck, shoulder, or forearm that contribute to the problem.

In modern regenerative medicine, we now understand that nerve and tissue recovery require more than stretching, exercise, or bracing; they require cellular-level regeneration and neuromuscular recalibration. Advances in regenerative and neuromodulatory care now make it possible to restore natural motion, improve circulation, and enhance nerve health, without relying on procedures that fail to provide long-term healing or tissue restoration, such as splints, exercises, medications, or invasive surgery.

At Shiva Physical Therapy, we approach healing through the lens of The S.H.I.V.A. Method™, which looks at the body as one interconnected system. If the source of dysfunction lies at the flexor retinaculum, we focus on regenerating and restoring that specific tissue, but we don't stop there. The S.H.I.V.A. Method™ also addresses the contributing restrictions along the kinetic chain that sustain or amplify the compression, ensuring that healing extends beyond the wrist to the entire system that supports it.

Why Our Approach Is Different

At Shiva Physical Therapy, we recognize that traditional treatments play an important role in treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. However, many patients need more than symptom management to reach lasting, full recovery. The S.H.I.V.A. Method™ was built as an additional, regenerative care framework that complements, not replaces, traditional treatment, but provides a deeper, more precise, and more regenerative approach to healing.

Traditional Treatment Approach

Focuses on relieving symptoms in the wrist
Uses proven strategies such as stretching, bracing, strengthening, manual therapy, dry needling, cupping , manipulations and neuromuscular stimulation etc.
Medications or injections may be used to reduce inflammation and pain
Treatment plans follow standard exercise protocols
Improvements may vary depending on underlying causes
Emphasizes local treatment at the site of pain
Excellent for early-care symptom relief

The S.H.I.V.A. Method™

Examines the entire system: wrist, flexor retinaculum, nerves, cervical spine, posture, biomechanics
Enhances these with regeneration modalities to restore nerve glide, circulation, fascia, and tissue health
Avoids dependency by activating the body’s natural regenerative mechanisms

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does The S.H.I.V.A. Method™ treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome naturally and non-surgically?
+
The S.H.I.V.A. Method™ addresses the entire kinetic chain from neck to wrist and treats the root cause. It restores nerve glide, circulation, and tissue regeneration through non-invasive modalities and manual therapies, helping patients heal naturally and prevent recurrence.
Can Carpal Tunnel heal without surgery?
+
In many cases, yes, non-surgical regenerative physical therapy can significantly reduce inflammation, restore nerve mobility, and improve function. Using advanced modalities and precise manual care, many patients experience meaningful relief and even full recovery. However, in severe or long-standing cases, where nerve compression has caused permanent damage or muscle atrophy, full regeneration may not be possible. Even then, our goal is to optimize comfort, function, and quality of life through targeted care that slows progression and supports natural healing wherever possible.
How is this different from regular physical therapy?
+
This is one of the most common questions we get. Traditional physical therapy often focuses on stretching, splinting, and strengthening to manage symptoms. At Shiva Physical Therapy, our regenerative approach goes further. We integrate advanced modalities with precise manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, and targeted functional retraining to treat the root cause, not just the symptoms. This combination promotes true tissue healing, restores nerve communication, and supports long-term recovery rather than temporary relief.
What are the most common causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
+
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often develops when the median nerve becomes compressed beneath the flexor retinaculum, the strong ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel. Contributing factors include repetitive wrist motions, prolonged computer or phone use, poor posture, hormonal or metabolic imbalances, and nerve tension originating in the neck, shoulder, or forearm. Using The S.H.I.V.A. Method™, we identify and treat all contributing factors, from the flexor retinaculum and wrist tendons to upstream nerve tension in the neck and shoulder.
How long does recovery take?
+
Your recovery timeline depends on nerve healing rate, tissue response, and adherence to your personalized plan, factors we monitor closely throughout your regenerative journey. Our S.H.I.V.A. Method™ regenerative framework ensures every phase of healing is supported naturally and progressively.
