We see..

We treat..

We track..

At Shiva Physical Therapy, we begin every plan with a simple but powerful principle: understand before you act and never guess.

That’s why we use real-time, high-frequency diagnostic ultrasound, a safe, non-invasive imaging tool that helps us visualize muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and soft tissues at your very first visit. This helps us quickly identify the true cause of your pain or dysfunction and tailor your recovery plan with precision and purpose.

We use the Clarius L15 HD3 handheld ultrasound system, a cutting-edge, wireless, high-resolution device designed for musculoskeletal imaging in physical therapy and sports medicine settings. But to us, it’s not about the technology itself. It’s about how it helps us help you heal smarter and faster.

Why MSK Ultrasound?

Treating Smarter with Real-Time Insight

MSK ultrasound allows us to go beyond what can be felt with hands-on exams or inferred from standard orthopedic tests. By providing real-time, point-of-care imaging, we can directly visualize what’s happening inside your body as we assess you, helping us answer critical questions such as:

Is your pain coming from a tendon, nerve, or joint?

Is the tissue inflamed, swollen, or scarred?

Is there a structural change or just functional irritation?

Has our treatment actually changed the tissue over time?

This level of diagnostic clarity means we don’t just react to symptoms, we respond to the root cause, track how tissues are healing, and adapt the care plan dynamically as your body progresses.

Ask Yourself

Have you been told you “might have bursitis” or “possibly a muscle tear” without anyone actually showing you what’s happening inside your body?
How confident can any diagnosis be if it’s based only on symptoms, touch, or movement tests, without a tool that can see the tissue in real time?
Pain can come from many sources that feel the same on the outside: tendon irritation, fluid buildup, nerve sensitivity, or muscle strain. Without imaging, these conditions are often assumed, not confirmed.

At Shiva Physical Therapy, we believe you deserve answers, not guesses. If someone is labeling your condition, you should be able to see what’s wrong, understand it, and track how it’s healing. That’s exactly why real-time MSK ultrasound matters.

Full-Body Integration: Spine and Extremities

Insight That Drives Smarter Decision-Making

We use ultrasound in several ways throughout your healing journey:

During Your Initial Evaluation
During Your Initial Evaluation

Ultrasound helps us confirm or rule out suspected diagnoses, such as tendinopathy, bursitis, ligament sprain, nerve irritation, or fluid buildup. It helps us visualize fascial restrictions, joint effusion, or rotator cuff involvement in shoulder pain, for example. We pair this imaging with movement testing and manual assessment to simplify the picture of what’s really going on.

Throughout Your Treatment Plan

As treatment progresses, we use ultrasound to monitor tissue changes over time. Are the tendons looking healthier? Is the swelling resolving? Is the nerve gliding freely again? This helps us adjust your care to match your actual progress, not just symptom reports.

To Guide and Validate Advanced Modalities
To Guide and Validate Advanced Modalities

When we integrate regenerative treatments such as EMTT, Shockwave, Laser, SCENAR, and other advanced modalities, MSK ultrasound helps us:

  • Target therapy more accurately

  • Avoid applying treatment over vulnerable tissues

  • Ensure interventions are working structurally, not just symptomatically

The Role of MSK Ultrasound in the S.H.I.V.A. Method™

In our proprietary S.H.I.V.A. Method™, ultrasound plays a key role in the Simplify and Hone phases of care:

SIMPLIFY

We begin by cutting through symptom complexity. Ultrasound allows us to pinpoint the tissue responsible for your pain or movement limitation, distinguish between structural and functional causes, and identify hidden drivers of dysfunction that standard testing may miss. It gives us a visual roadmap to guide your initial phase of healing.

“Pain can be misleading. MSK Ultrasound shows us what symptoms and tests sometimes can’t.”

HONE

As we move into precise tissue-level treatment, MSK ultrasound allows us to:

  • Track tendon remodeling, fascial restrictions, and fluid accumulation

  • Monitor progress after regenerative therapies like Shockwave or EMTT

  • Confirm improvements in neural mobility and reduce recurrence risk

This helps us hone your care plan in real time, ensuring every step is aligned with your body’s current healing phase.

What This Means for You

Clarity, Confidence, Faster & Smarter Recovery.

Build better plans faster, without waiting on outside imaging
Validate what’s improving, so you know you’re on the right track
Adapt treatment quickly if healing stalls or shifts
Reduce unnecessary treatments by seeing what’s actually going on

And because it’s completely safe, painless, and non-invasive, it can be used anytime during your care without side effects or radiation exposure.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound Assessment

Let’s take a hard look

  • You’ll see us apply a small handheld device (the Clarius probe) to your skin using a bit of gel.

  • The process takes just a few minutes.

  • You can watch what we see, and we’ll explain the findings in real time.

  • There is no pain, and no downtime.

We may use ultrasound:

  • On your first visit for diagnosis

  • During treatment progress checks

  • As a decision-making tool for when to advance or modify your plan

Why We Include Imaging in Your Physical Therapy Care

Most physical therapy clinics can only guess what’s happening beneath the surface. At Shiva Physical Therapy, we believe you deserve more than that. You deserve transparency, confidence, and proof.

That’s what our ultrasound system provides, not just better information for us, but more clarity for you as the patient. And when you understand what’s happening inside your body, it’s easier to commit to the process and trust the path forward.

Let us show you what’s really going on beneath the surface and use that insight to help you heal smarter, faster, and more completely.

FAQs About MSK Ultrasound at Shiva Physical Therapy

Is ultrasound safe?
Yes. Ultrasound imaging is completely safe, non-invasive, and free of radiation. It uses high-frequency sound waves, not X-rays, to create real-time images.
Will I feel anything during the scan?
No. The process is entirely painless. You’ll just feel a bit of cool gel on your skin and gentle movement of the handheld device.
Do I need to prepare ahead of time?
No preparation is needed. You can wear comfortable clothing, and we’ll expose only the area being scanned.
Is this included in my session, or is it a separate service?
At Shiva Physical Therapy, ultrasound is integrated directly into your evaluation or treatment session when clinically relevant. It’s not a separate or upsold service.
How is ultrasound different from an MRI or X-ray?
Unlike MRI or X-rays, ultrasound gives us real-time, dynamic views, meaning we can see tissues as they move or under pressure. It also shows soft tissues (like tendons or nerves) that X-rays can’t visualize.
